SUNTORY AND ITS DISTILLERIES
Suntory is the biggest whisky manufacturer in Japan. Over 80 years ago, when Japanese economy was still weak and imported Scotch was extremely expensive, founder Shinichiro Torii aimed to produce Japanese whisky. While his surroundings did not believe his success, Shinier built first distillery in small village called Yamazaki, where is near Japanese old capital Kyoto in 1923. He started whisky production which was learned in Scotland.
Since then, over 80 years has passed. Now, whisky is indispensable to Japanese and they love Suntory whisky. In addition to Yamazaki Distillery, because of the popular demand, Suntory built Hakusyu Distillery in 1973 in Yamanashi, where is centre of Japan
BIRTH OF YAMAZAKI SINGLE MALT
Like Scotch whiskies, these distilleries used to be for blended whisky, but in 1984, best matured stocks were chosen and Suntory launched Yamazaki Single Malt 12 Years.
Now, Yamazaki is No.1 Single Malt in Japan where single malt whisky is booming like other countries.
Until recently, Yamazaki Single Malt was sold mainly to Japanese domestic market and only a limited amount were exported for Japanese businessmen who were working abroad

In Europe, Scotch Malt is now booming and after having heavy study and research toward Scotch malt, those whisky journalists and malt maniacs started looking for something special for other area. What they found was Japanese Single Malt.
