Glenmorangie Distillery Notes :
Glenmorangie was established in 1843 when William Matheson bought a license to make whisky on the site of a brewery located near the Tarlogie Springs in Ross-shire in the highlands of Scotland. Matheson bought two second-hand gin stills to make his spirit, and the distillery is famous for having the tallest stills in Scotland.
In 1918 the distillery was bought by Macdonald and Muir, who steered Glenmorangie through the difficult inter-war period when the combination of Prohibition and the Great Depression made conditions very difficult for the industry as a whole. Having survived, Glenmorangie went on to flourish, doubling the number of stills to four in 1977 and again to eight in 1990, the year after the company had secured the future of its own water source by buying 650 acres of land around the Tarlogie Springs.
In 2005 the The company has been owned by the international luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy and continues to produce a fist class range of award winning malt whiskies
Tasting Notes :
Colour
Rich dark honey.
Nose
Warm, with sherry and well-blended, hints of treacle and little peaty for a Glenmorangie.
Taste
Initial taste
Rich, dark chocolate, treacle again, walnut, black raisins. The sensation seems to go across the top of the palate and down the back of the mouth.
Later taste
A little of the spirit edge comes off and leaves a lush, warm, enveloping taste. There is a hint of spice and bitter Seville oranges but with the bitterness masked by the sweetness of the sherry, while there is a suggestion that the treacle has changed to almost-liquorice.
Finish
Smooth and rich and relaxing.
