Distillery Notes, courtesy of www.blackbottle.com :
Black Bottle's unique taste owes its character and heart to the innovation and mastery of Gordon Graham, the first master blender of Black Bottle. His vision and skill has ensured that Black Bottle's enduring taste is, to this day, second to none, a timeless classic.
Blending is the secretive alchemy of the whisky world. The art of taking great whiskies, matching and profiling them by nose alone to create a new drink that can distil the character of an entire area, is to be savoured and appreciated. Great tasting blends are sadly few and far and between, possibly due to a limited number of truly masterful blenders. We can, however, proudly say that Black Bottle's taste can be counted among this number, having been recognised by critics and whisky lovers alike.
The process of blending was pioneered by Andrew Usher in Edinburgh in the early 1860's. Malt whiskies are chosen for their character and taste and are added to grain whisky, which is very much the blank canvas that the blend is built upon. Once the whiskies are mixed together, a process called 'vatting', they are married in casks, allowing the individual whiskies to settle down and get to know one another, thus producing the finished blend.
